While the sun is clearly our main source of light, artificial illumination has become increasingly important in our daily activities. Light allows us to communicate, entertain, explore and understand the world we inhabit and the universe we live in.

For our safety and comfort, ISO and its technical committees develop and revise standards to improve our lighted environment. In its development of International Standards, ISO also has a strong partnership with the International Commission on Illumination (CIE), which is the premier global organization in the science and art of light and lighting. Drawing on an immense wealth of expertise, the CIE brings together people and networks – nationally, regionally and globally – in a variety of disciplines.

2015 has been declared Year of Light by UNESCO and ISO is proud to support it. In the following infographic, discover some of the areas that are subject to standardization.
